Prior to serving on the Judiciary, Judge Passero
was engaged in the private practice of law in
Paterson, New Jersey and Hawthorne, New Jersey.
His practice concentrated on civil litigation
(medical malpractice, products liability, negligence,
construction law, municipal law, zoning, and
planning and election law).
He was appointed by the Governor Thomas Keane
as a Superior Court Judge in 1988.
During his Judicial
tenure Judge Passero served in each Division
(Law Division: Civil and Criminal, Chancery
Division: Family Part and General Equity Recusal
Judge). He also served as the Mt. Laurel Judge,
Environmental Judge, OPRA Judge and the Election
Law Judge.
During his judicial tenure, Judge Passero tried
hundreds of cases including a capital murder
case, election cases, prerogative writs litigation,
and was successful in helping to settle the
Passaic fire case (involving hundreds of claims
stemming from a major fire which destroyed much
of a Passaic industrial complex in 1985).
He also negotiated a settlement between the
Essex County Bar association and the Essex County
Executive and Freeholders resulting in the complete
repair and refurbishing of the historic Essex
County Courthouse.
Judge Passero was instrumental in achieving
a global settlement of a mass environmental
case involving 1600 plaintiffs who filed a suit
against DuPont.
As Assignment Judge in Passaic County he successfully
negotiated an agreement with the Passaic County
Freeholders which resulted in improving health
and safety conditions in the Passaic County
Court Complex.
Judge Passero will serve as Of Counsel to Tompkins,
McGuire, Wachenfeld & Barry LLP and will
focus his practice on mediation, arbitration,
complex case management and Special Master Services.
